It can be a difficult task for the most of us to pick up sign language and understand what is being said. Most of us would think that teaching and getting cats to understand sign language may be a step too far.
This did not bother Kim Silva. Kim, a retired teacher from the American School for the Deaf decided to teach her cats sign language. She hoped it would lead to a better life for her deaf cat, Bambi who was rescued from the shelter. Most of our pets are used to voice commands but it is amazing to see what Kim has managed to do.
In this video her well trained cats respond to sign language including commands like ‘high five’ and ‘shake’. Her efforts could have a lot of possible applications in training pets to support deaf and dumb people.
