A Mother’s Love: The Incredible Story of a Cow Protecting Her Calf

The world is a harsh and unforgiving place, especially for those animals who have suffered unspeakable trauma at the hands of humans. It’s a sad fact, but for some, it’s a hard-won battle to learn how to trust again. The video we’ll show you is a poignant reminder of this. It is the story of a rescued dairy cow named Clarabelle. Her heartbreaking past still haunts her, and the trauma is so deep that she hides her calf to keep her safe.

As any mother knows, parenthood is not for the faint-hearted. It takes guts, perseverance, and a lot of love. Clarabelle, a dairy cow rescued and brought to Edgar’s Mission in Australia, is no exception to this. This beautiful sanctuary spans over 153 acres, and it’s a place where rescued animals can finally relax and enjoy their lives after enduring so much pain.

Clarabelle is one of the animals with emotional scars. She had been rescued from a dairy farm where she was about to be slaughtered for low milk production. Luckily, the sanctuary volunteers discovered that she was pregnant just in time, and they managed to save her life. The day finally arrived for Clarabelle to give birth, but before that happened, she started acting out of character.

Her mealtime didn’t elicit the usual eagerness in the cow as it typically did. The rescuers realized that something was off and decided to investigate. They found that Clarabelle had been hiding her baby for several days. Her past experience of having her calves taken from her had left her traumatized, and she feared the same thing would happen to her new baby.

Cows have deep maternal instincts and often mourn the loss or separation of their loved ones. But this time, Clarabelle had a chance to protect her baby. The calf was named Valentine in honor of the cows’ special love for their calves. As the rescuer in the video said, “No one’s ever gonna take Valentine away from her mama.”

We’re so glad that Clarabelle and Valentine are now safe and in such a wonderful place. Their story is one of resilience, determination, and the power of motherly love.
