Clarabelle is one of the animals with emotional scars. She had been rescued from a dairy farm where she was about to be slaughtered for low milk production. Luckily, the sanctuary volunteers discovered that she was pregnant just in time, and they managed to save her life. The day finally arrived for Clarabelle to give birth, but before that happened, she started acting out of character.
Her mealtime didn’t elicit the usual eagerness in the cow as it typically did. The rescuers realized that something was off and decided to investigate. They found that Clarabelle had been hiding her baby for several days. Her past experience of having her calves taken from her had left her traumatized, and she feared the same thing would happen to her new baby.
Cows have deep maternal instincts and often mourn the loss or separation of their loved ones. But this time, Clarabelle had a chance to protect her baby. The calf was named Valentine in honor of the cows’ special love for their calves. As the rescuer in the video said, “No one’s ever gonna take Valentine away from her mama.”
