The world is full of remarkable friendships, and the bond between Hemingway, the goose, and Waffles, the mini horse, is one that warms the heart and soul. Rescued from an unsanitary outdoor paddock in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, the bond between Hemingway and Waffles was immediately apparent to the Bucks County SPCA. Despite their different species, the pair had formed an unbreakable connection. “They truly are best friends. They don’t know that one’s a mini-horse and the other’s a goose. They have no idea. They’re besties,” explained the Bucks County SPCA.

Waffles had a minor infection upon rescue, and Hemingway was extremely protective of his friend’s care. He would stay close and become loud anytime an SPCA employee approached to give Waffles medicine or injections, getting between Waffles and the workers to let them know that Waffles was not alone. This protective behavior made it clear that Waffles and Hemingway were a package deal and needed to be adopted together.

Maddie and Nick, who had created a farm initially for her horse, Peabody, decided to adopt the duo. They knew that Hemingway and Waffles would fit right in with Peabody’s feisty personality. On the day of the move, Maddie and Nick took extra care to ensure that Hemingway and Waffles were comfortable. The pair was nervous at first, but once they were reunited in the trailer, they immediately relaxed.

Upon arriving at their new home, Waffles and Hemingway were in for a few surprises. Waffles, who had only ever been around birds, including Hemingway, was about to meet another horse for the first time. Peabody, the horse already living on the farm, was initially scared of his new, smaller family members. However, it did not take long for everyone to settle in and start enjoying their new surroundings. Waffles trotted happily around the open space, rolling in the sand, while Hemingway splashed around in his new, larger pool.

After a difficult beginning, Waffles and Hemingway found their forever home and became part of a larger family. “Now, Hemingway has Peabody to take care of, instead of just Waffles, and Waffles is on his way to becoming a therapy horse. They’ve been a joy to us, and we hope they can be a joy to other people,” Maddie shared. This heartwarming story of friendship and resilience shows the beauty of unexpected connections and the importance of finding a place where you truly belong.
