People tend to assume that cows are antisocial and distant animals. But anyone who has raised a cow will let you know cows are loving and compassionate animals. That was definitely the case for Kelsey’s adorable cow, Mello.
The day Kelsey introduced the baby cow Mello to her dogs, she was unsure how they would react. “[Our dogs] had never seen a cow,” said Kelsey. “[They were] like, ‘What is this thing? Why did you bring it here?’”
To help Mello acclimate to his new home, Kelsey and her partner let the baby cow sleep in their room. After a few days, they put him in a pen indoors. “We made the dogs stay in there with him so that he didn’t feel alone,” said Kelsey.
With some time, Mello and his canine siblings grew to love and accept each other. “And now they love each other,” said Kelsey. “They hang out. They run around all day.”
As he grew bigger, Mello had to live outside, but that did not stop him from finding ways to be near his favorite people. The clever cow even taught himself how to open doors with his mouth.
Despite their worries, Mello ended up being a perfect fit for his family. Even when his family grew to include a baby sibling and a pair of kittens, Mello continued to show his compassion and love.
Kelsey could not be more proud of Mello. “I just love how integrated into our family he is,” said Kelsey. “He just makes me smile every time I see him.”
