There’s an old saying that goes, “Friendship isn’t about who you’ve known the longest, but who came and never left your side.” This wisdom holds true for all creatures, big and small. Let me share a heartwarming tale from my days as a veterinarian that reminds me of this very lesson.

On a quaint farm in Oklahoma, a peculiar friendship blossomed. Every morning, a tiny mallard named Olee would waddle up to the dog door, waiting with bated breath. Now, one might assume he was waiting for another duck, perhaps a companion of his kind. But that’s where the story takes an unexpected turn.
From the house emerged a creature nearly 30 times Olee’s weight: a majestic, chocolate-colored Saint Bernard named Biss. The sight of them together was both amusing and endearing. Their owner, Jessie Vallier, recounted how Olee began following Biss around shortly after they were introduced. “About a month after we adopted them, he became Biss’s little shadow,” she fondly recalled.

Their bond was unmistakable. While dogs express their joy by wagging their tails, Olee had his own unique way. Whenever Biss would bound outside, Olee’s excitement was palpable, flapping his wings as if he were about to take flight. Their playtimes were a sight to behold. They’d indulge in water sports, with Olee gracefully swimming in a kiddie pool and Biss, in his own laid-back manner, simply floating. They’d even play fetch, though it was more of Biss chasing the ball and Olee cheerfully running alongside him.
Witnessing their interactions, Vallier was always amazed at the comfort and understanding between the two. “It’s amazing watching a 153-pound dog play and be around with a 5-pound duck,” she mused. Their bond was so special that Vallier was inspired to pen a children’s book titled “Adventures of Biss and Olee,” capturing the essence of their unique friendship.

Now, isn’t that something? A duck and a dog, two creatures so different in size and nature, coming together in the purest form of friendship. It’s a testament to the fact that love and companionship know no bounds.
If this heartwarming tale touched your heart as it did mine, please share it with your friends and family. And always remember, be kind to every creature, for you never know the bonds that can form.
