A tale as old as time – that of a dog, and the human it saved. While this narrative may sound common, it’s anything but. Imagine learning that your puppy, Aster Rose, is both blind and deaf. The shock and helplessness you might feel could be overwhelming. This was the situation for one family who, out of desperation, instructed their veterinarian to put her down. But this is a story of hope, not of despair, for the veterinarian refused. Instead, he embarked on a quest to find a shelter that could take care of Aster and her sister.

Enter Krysten, a kind-hearted soul with experience in caring for dogs with special needs. Her dog, Little Buddy, was also blind and deaf, and she had cared for him with all the love and tenderness he deserved. Krysten understood that dogs with disabilities can live high-quality lives filled with joy, love, and playtime. She knew that they needed a special kind of love, but one that she was more than willing to give.

Upon seeing Aster’s picture, Krysten immediately submitted an adoption application and soon after, brought her home. Little did she know, this decision would lead to a friendship that would change their lives forever.

Living with Krysten were Little Buddy, an Australian shepherd, and two cats, Teddy and Goose, all of whom had been abandoned and subsequently adopted by her. Despite their past traumas, under Krysten’s care, they thrived. Little Buddy, despite being blind and deaf, was incredibly active and loved exploring new places. Teddy and Goose, once wary and withdrawn, had grown to enjoy Little Buddy’s company.

Upon Aster’s arrival, something magical happened. Teddy, usually indifferent to newcomers, approached her for a snuggle. Goose, too, formed a close bond with Little Buddy. But it was the bond between Aster and Little Buddy that stole the show. They became inseparable, finding comfort and companionship in each other’s presence. Together, they navigated the world, proving that disability is not a barrier to living a fulfilling life.

The journey of Aster, Little Buddy, Teddy, and Goose is a reminder that animals with special needs are just as precious and deserving of love as any other. It also highlights the importance of not giving up on them, for with the right care and environment, they can lead happy, healthy lives. So, if you are considering adding a furry friend to your family, remember: adopt, don’t shop. And consider opening your heart to a pet with special needs. They might just change your life for the better.
