Gemma and Sous Chef Dog Share Simple, Delicious Frozen Treat Recipes for Pups

You don’t want to eat the same food every day, right? Chances are your dog doesn’t either. Fortunately, Gemma Stafford of Bigger, Bolder Baking has a few simple recipes for frozen treats your pup — or cat — can enjoy when the weather gets hot.

Gemma demonstrates her recipes with her rescue dog Waffles, a wheaten terrier-lhasa apso mix, as a sous chef. The first recipe calls for peanut butter, banana and yogurt mixed together, then frozen in an ice tray or mold. Hers, of course, are bone-shaped. The peanut butter should be unsalted and the yogurt unsweetened. Yogurt, Gemma points out, is full of protein and good for dogs’ digestion.

The next recipe calls for the same yogurt, but this time layered with diced strawberries and blueberries, both of which Gemma says are “nutritional powerhouses” full of antioxidants. The final recipe, also suitable for cats, mixes mashed raspberries, and low-sodium chicken stock.

All treats take just four or five hours in the freezer to solidify, then you’re ready to offer your pet a real treat that will also cool them off. And Judging by Waffles’s reaction, these treats are definitely doggie-approved.
