Beagles are a widely beloved breed of dog and as you’ll see, there’s good reason for this. They were originally bred for hunting rabbit and hare: beagles are highly intelligent yet single-minded dogs. Later, thanks to their amazingly acute sense of smell, beagles have been employed by various nations’ customs services as sniffer dogs, particularly for detecting agricultural contraband. Beagles are also well-suited to this role because of their small size, pleasant demeanor, and non-threatening appearance. For this reason, they’re also excellent therapy dogs. At first, a beagle might be a little standoffish with a new person but these naturally friendly dogs are quickly won over. This makes them the world’s worst guard dogs! You might think that these gentle, amiable and even “merry” dogs would make excellent family pets and you’d be absolutely right. They get along wonderfully with children.
This brings us to Charlie the beagle. When his human parents brought home the newest member of the family (or pack, to take Charlie’s perspective), a baby named Laura, the first thing they did was introduce her to Charlie. Since then, the clever and devoted dog has taken on quite an array of useful tasks: helping with diaper changing, swinging the cradle, pushing the button at crosswalks, and even playing a toy piano. “We taught our dog how to play keyboard, how to change traffic lights and how to swing a baby crib, but we never had to teach him how to love our daughter. Now they are best friends. Thank you Charlie for makes her smile every day.”
Charlie really did love Laura from the get-go. As you’ll see in the video we’ve posted below, he’s an expert at gently playing with the little girl. Best of all, you can see how glad each is to be spending time with the other.
