The Walstad method setup is great when it works. However, it can be difficult and time consuming for the first 2 months or so, until the plants establish themselves. Only after the plants are established should you consider adding in animals.
If you don’t put any livestock in your build, you don’t need to do daily water changes. Only change the water if it becomes too brown. With a thick enough plant cover on the top of the tank, the water should not become brown, but if it does, add more plants to the surface.
