Dana D’Amelio saw a group of soldiers attempting to remove a drain grate on a military base in South Korea. Then she heard the loud, high-pitched meows of a tiny kitten coming from inside the drain and she knew right away that there must be a kitten caught inside the drain and the soldiers were engaging in a rescue mission.
Wanting to offer assistance, Dana volunteered to climb down into the grate after the tiny squealing baby. Unable to see anything in the darkness, she felt around until her hand came to rest on a small furry animal. She pulled the kitten close to her body and emerged victorious with the infant cat.
The kitten, who Dana named Eli, was only about three weeks old and unable to eat solid foods yet, so she embarked on a mission to learn how to properly care for a kitten of his age through watching instructional videos by Hannah, The Kitten Lady. Dana brought the little ginger feline to work with her so that she could continue her round-the-clock care for him during her work breaks.
Eli continued to flourish and grow with leaps and bounds. When it was time for Dana to leave the base and return to her home in California, naturally, Eli came home with her. Once home, she adopted another kitten so that Eli could have a feline companion, Ezra. Ezra knew all about being a cat – lessons he was not able to learn from Dana – and the two became inseparable buddies.
