Shelby is a ginormous Great Dane who has helped raise hundreds of puppies and dozens of kittens. She has been a massive help to Shirley Zindler of the Dogwood Animal Rescue Project.
If there are any new puppies, they will naturally crowd around Shelby. When Shirley is feeding them from a bottle, Shelby will typically have her nose one inch away from them.
Three years ago, Shirley adopted Shelby from a shelter after Shelby’s family surrendered her. Shelby was only eight months old and was initially supposed to be adopted out.
After seeing how Shelby interacted with the dogs, cats, kittens, and puppies, Shirley decided to keep her. Shelby was always so sweet and loved welcoming new fosters.
The puppies usually bite on Shelby’s jowls, and she will freeze until they let go. She is incredibly gentle with them and teaches them how to interact with other dogs politely.
For the kittens, Shelby allows them to get used to dogs in case they move into a home that has canines. Shirley knows that all the fosters always have something to learn from Shelby.
Shelby has seen hundreds of puppies and lots of kittens. She is a crucial part of the rescue, and she also gets a lot of entertainment taking care of the fosters.
