Should You Let The Dog Share The Bed With You? Here Are Seven Reasons

A lot of people who don’t have a dog think it’s kind of crazy for anyone to share a nice, clean cozy bed with an animal. A few dog owners may agree if their furry friend has issues with muddy paws, shedding, or fleas and ticks. Still, it’s hard to deny that it’s cute to see someone sleeping soundly with a dog curled up next to them.

There’s some new research that shows letting your dog sleep next to you isn’t crazy at all; in fact, there are some benefits. The study was conducted by the Center for Sleep Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona. Of the 150 people studied, 56 percent shared a bed or bedroom with a dog or cat. Among them, fully 41 percent said their pet’s presence made them feel more secure and helped them sleep better.

If that study doesn’t convince you, there’s plenty more evidence. Therapy dogs are frequently used to reduce stress and anxiety, and it’s no accident: a friendly dog makes you feel more relaxed. A dog’s presence can make you feel more secure, even if you don’t need physical protection from Fido. A dog’s unconditional love can be just the thing if you’re feeling blue. In fact, if it’s more serious than that — if you suffer from depression — having a dog at your side can be a big help. Incidentally, having your dog curled up next to you at night isn’t just good for you, it’s good for your dog, too. You provide them the same emotional support and sense of security.

There are also a couple of little practical benefits, too. One is that if you’re relaxed and feeling secure, you’ll fall asleep faster and thus enjoy a longer night’s sleep. The other benefit, at least in cooler weather, is that your furry friend will help keep you warm.

Are you going to let Fido spend the night with you, or is that how it’s been all along? Let us know in the comments and be sure to like and share!
