Winter can be a very difficult season for all manner of creatures. When the temperatures drop, many animals go into a kind of hibernation mode, or head south to warmer climates. Food becomes scarce, as there are no flowers blooming or bushes bearing fruit, and the ground gets too hard for birds to find insects. In times like these, when the animals who can’t migrate are left scrounging for every scrap they can find, having the help of kind humans can mean a world of difference. The man in the video above knows just how important a few minutes can mean.
When you think of Arizona, you may not think of freezing temperatures and blizzards, but there are parts of that state that get incredibly cold in the middle of winter. The weather can get so cold that any water left outside will freeze to solid ice. That’s exactly what happened here, when this man discovered that all of his hummingbird feeders had turned into hummingbird popsicles. They weren’t able to access the life giving nutrients inside the feeders, and he knew he had to do something to help. At first, he brought the feeders inside overnight, but they would still start to freeze after only an hour outside, so he upped his game.
He brought out a heating pad, and set one of the feeders on top. When he came outside the next day, he found two hummingbirds cozied up on the warm pad! He named them Rocky and Adrian. At one point, he decided to bring out a hair dryer to warm up the food, and Rocky showed just how courageous he is by eating from the feeder while it was being heated, even basking in the warm air from the hair dryer. What an incredible experience!
