Four years earlier, tumultuous circumstances in her life forced Sue Blagburn to sell one of her horses, a thoroughbred named Arthur. He went on to became a star at high-class equestrian competitions. Things did eventually settle down in Sue’s life. She sold her old farm and bought a new one. When she saw that her old friend Arthur was on the market, she bought him, too!
Among the residents at Sue’s new farm were William and Harry, two of Arthur’s friends from “Foalhood.” She was inclined to believe that the horses would recognize each other, but she couldn’t really be sure. It had, after all, been a long time and the horses had lived very different lives and had lots of other horse friends since they last saw each other. Would the New Forest ponies William and Harry really remember their old friend the elite thoroughbred? Would Arthur the thoroughbred deign to recognize his old foalhood playmates?
Sue needn’t have worried. When she brought Arthur to see William and Harry, the spark of recognition was instant! The horses were incredibly happy to be reunited. They ran toward each other and then treated each other to some seriously lavish neck nuzzling. After that, they took off on a wild frolic through the field that ended with some happy rolling around on the ground. “Well, they’re just being horses, but horses that love each other and remember each other.” While Arthur nuzzled William’s neck some more, Sue explained, “William is quite bossy. He wouldn’t let any other horse do what Arthur is doing… Harry has just accepted it. This is how it always used to be… Well as I said before, I knew they would recognize each other but this is so much more deep than I thought possible.”
