Dayton O’ Hyde is a cowboy, a conservationist, and an award-winning writer. He spent the most recent years of his life preserving an important part of wild America. Dayton moved to the Black Hills of South Dakota in 1990. Since then he has dedicated his life to operating this 11,000 acre sanctuary for wild horses.
It has been difficult to keep interested parties off the land to preserve it for horses. Dayton has gone up against oil companies and even the government. Dayton described the source of his passion as, ‘This is as close to heaven as I’ll probably ever get.’
There are hundreds of wild mustangs the run free at the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary. Where is located in south the coder is a very peaceful environment, it surrounded by the flowing Cheyenne River and is possibly one of the most wild places in the contiguous United States.
