100 horses were trapped on this small island and the waters were rising. They were caught out by and unexpectedly strong storm that hit this village in the Netherlands. The storm rose seawater into the wilderness outside the dikes of Marrum.
19 horses died and the remaining horses spent 3 days stuck on a small lowland knoll. Firemen and animal welfare groups supplied the horse with food and fresh water. Rescue attempts didn’t succeed because they could not get the horses to brave the water.
On the third day help arrived. Another storm was due to hit and it was time to take drastic action. Seven expert female horse riders arrived to help the stranded horses. These women swan out and skillful saved these horses lives.
