Most days, ESPN covers the latest updates in sports. But the host, Scott Van Pelt, decided to take a break from the usual coverage to dedicate the show to his best friend and dog, Otis.

As any fur parent will tell you, the passing of a pet is one of the most painful losses a person will have to face. Our fur babies offer loyalty, compassion and unconditional love, and they are always taken too soon.
It was clear from Scott’s eulogy that his late pup lived like a true king before he passed away. Make sure you have a few tissues nearby for this heartwarming and heartbreaking story.

Otis was the first dog Scott had. “I waited a long time in my life to get married,” he said. “I waited just a bit longer to get my first dog.”
Scott and his wife thought Otis would be “training wheels” for the responsibilities of a child. The couple ended up getting more than they bargained for. Otis received surgery after surgery. “We jokingly started referring to him as Otis the bullet dodger.”

Unfortunately, Otis could not dodge them all, and eventually, the sweet boy passed away. When he lost his dog, Scott cried more than he ever had. “Such profound sadness over a love that was so damn pure,” said Scott.
But despite all the pain and deep sadness, it was still worth it. “But if this hurt is the cost of the transaction for being on the receiving end of a mighty love,” said Scott. “Then I’d pay it with enormous gratitude.”
